비대칭세력연합 이론을 통한 동아시아 외교사의 재해석

이 논문은 국제관계학에 의해 정립된 강대국과 약소군 간의 군사연합(비대칭세력 간 연합)을 동아시아 국제관계사, 특히 한반도 국가들과 중국 왕조들 간의 국제관계사를 통해 검증하는 것이 목적이다. 국제관계이론의 검증은 많은 부분 유럽사를 통해 진행되었고, 동맹이론 역시 동일했다. Glenn Snyder 등의 동맹이론가들은 유럽 지역의 수평적 국제질서 하에서 반복되었던 동맹의 결성과 해체를 통해서 동맹딜레마를 설명하였다. Morrow는 냉전기 한미동맹을 사례로 하여 Snyder등이 제시한 일반적인 군사연합과 다른 상황, 수직적 국제질서 하의 연합관계를 제시하였다. 그러나 이에 대해 다음과 같은 의문과 반론이 제기될 수 있다. 비대칭세력 간 군사연합은 냉전질서라는 시대적 특징으로 인한 것이 아닌가? 본 논문은 과거 동아시아 지역의 국제관계사 중에서 비대칭세력 간 연합이론이 적용될 수 있는 사례를 살펴보고, 어떻게 이러한 이론이 여기에 적용될 수 있는지 설명할 것이다. 본문은 이러한 분석을 통해 비대칭세력 간 연합의 이론적 설명력을 보충하고자 한다.
Abstract
This research examines the conventional wisdom of IR scholarship, the Alliance Studies and its sub-field, the asymmetric relations with East Asian cases. This work discuss how the theory of asymmetric relations can be applied in the international relations between minor and major states in the pre-modern East Asia. The research especially sheds a light on the relations between Silla-Tang, Goryeo-Mongol[Yuan], and Joseon-Ming dynasties, all of which demonstrate the nature of asymmetric relations and their projection of power on the shared strategic target(s). By working on the historical documents, this work attempts to verify the theory of asymmetric relations and suggests how important to verify the IR theories by non-Western cases. This research also provides a more exact picture of the international relations, East Asian states in the pre-modern era from the perspective of IR scholars.
