Abstract
An asymmetric alliance between great power and small power is based on the Autonomy-Security Trade-off model. However, this rule does not provide a convincing framework to explain the internal dynamics of the Sino-North Korean relation, because North Korea did not always follow the chinese policy, even though the Sino-North Korean military alliance was a robust back-up for a regime’s survival. This Paper will examine the reason why is this autonomy of weaker states in the asymmetric alliance possible, focused on the Sino-North Korean relation after the second nuclear crisis with a Michael Handel’s theoretical framework. My Argumentations are as follows: The external Autonomy against the China is influenced by the structural factor like a balance of power between China and USA. Under this international structure, an actor(North Korea) will persue three measures: North Korea will challenge the classical rules of balance of power system by adding its weight to the stronger side, persue a destablizing policy under the circumstances of the cooperative relation-building of great powers(China and USA), will concentrate on shaping a lasting conflict between two big powers.
