Abstract
This paper tries to critically introduce the recently fashioned theoretical group of modernity / coloniality, including Enrique Dussel, Anibal Quijano, Walter Mignolo and so on,which has now been shaping a powerful theoretical trend in the field of cultural studies, in particular, Latin American studies. The primary aim of this group is to criticize the Eurocentric conception of modernity and think other modernity radically. One of the reasons why it criticizes the Eurocentric conception of modernity is that the conception is an irrational myth in that it has thoroughly repressed and concealed the ruthless and violent histories of exploitation and massacre in America by the Europeans. Therefore this group tries to attend to coloniality as the darker side of modernity and to the originary entanglement between modernity and coloniality. In order to make sense of this entanglement, this group needs the recognition of colonial difference as a crucial epistemic turn. Coloniality is one of the most essential keywords in this modernity / coloniality group. According to this group, modernity could not be thinkable without coloniality because coloniality is constitutive of modernity and vice versa. It has revealed itself not only in the originary moment of modernity but also in racial / national hierarchy since the formation of the modern world-system. Quijano calls this kind of racial hierarchy and stratification as ‘the coloniality of power.’As the alternative to the existing conception of modernity and the coloniality of power, this group proposes transmodernity and the ethic of liberation. For Dussel, transmodernity is against both modernity and postmodernity. Transmodernity basically shares the postmodern critique of the irrational myth of modernity but doesn’t agree to the total rejection of modernity itself. Rather it tries to restore the rich rational cultures and values of modernity concealed by its irrational myth and overcome the irrational limits of modernity based upon the restoration of various cultures and values. To this group, transmodern rationality means both the liberation from irrational myth of modernity and the restoration of cultural ecology.
