Abstract
This paper aims to clarify the role and meaning of the concept of woman and family presented as a condition of hospitality in Emmanuel Levinas's Totality and Infinity, and to relate its problems to his religious attitude toward judaism. For Levinas, hospitality is a key concept for reorienting philosophy toward an ethical foundation. Hospitality is the identity of a dis-self-oriented subject, which is conditioned by the interiority of woman and family. The problem here is that Levinas's setting of women and family is given a male-centered characterization based on Jewish scriptures and traditional ethics. This paper will argue that the reason why the hierarchical asymmetry of patriarchy is presented as a condition for hospitality is related to Levinas' theological attitude towards Judaism, and is intended to shift the two lineages of Western philosophy, the Greek and the Christianity, to the Greek and the Judaic. And it will point out that the step of hospitality, which is supposed to be directed towards the “poor, orphan, widow, and stranger,” are producing a number of feminine other, such as Palestinians, who cannot leave the home.
