유럽 동양학자 레옹 드 로니의 탄생 과정과 그의 한국학 저술에 관한 서지 검토

본고의 목적은 레옹 드 로니(Léon Louis Lucien Prunol de Rosny)의 초기 이력을 통해 그가 대표적인 유럽 동양학자이자 한국학의 선구자로 탄생되는 과정을 살피고, 그의 한국학 주요 저술을 검토하는 데 있다. 프랑스 동양어학교 일본어과의 초대교수이자 『한국서지』의 저자 모리스 쿠랑의 은사로도 알려진 로니는 뛰어난 언어 능력을 무기로, 19세기 후반 한국의 언어․지리․역사에 관해 다수의 연구물을 발표하며, 유럽의 한국학 형성기에 막대한 공헌을 한 것으로 평가 받는다. 이에 본고는 먼저 로니의 초기이력을 전기 형식으로 간략히 기술하고, 이어서 그의 주요 한국학 저술의전반적 검토를 통해, 그가 취했던 학자적 방향성과 주요 참고 자료를 확인하고자 한다. 그리고 이를 통해 본고는 한국․일본학자로서 로니의 등장이 가지는 의의와 후대의 평가를 살펴보고, 무엇보다 그의 등장을 가능하게 했던 유럽과 프랑스의 사회․역사적 맥락을 함께 생각해 보고자 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to describe the early career of Léon Louis Lucien Prunol de Rosny as a European scholar of the Orient and pioneer of Koreanology and to examine his major writings in Korean studies. de Rosny, who served as a first professor at the Japanese Language Department at the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations in France and taught Maurice Courant (author of the Bibliographie coréenne), published numerous research works on the language, geography and history of Korea in the late 19th century which demonstrated his many talents (particularly linguistic competence). In this article, we will first briefly describe de Rosny's early personal history, second we will review his major Korean studies and then we will identify the scholarly direction his work pointed to and major bibliographical references to that work. Through this article, we will examine de Rosny’s significance as a Koreanologist-Japanologist and his place in the history of such studies. Above all, we will examine the socio-historical context that made his emergence possible in Europe and in France.
