초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the role played by the bibliographies of Korea compiled by the West in the process of the development of Korean studies. This study specifically examines the academic continuity of the Bibliographie Coréenne compiled at the end of the 19th century by Maurice Courant and ‘A Partial Bibliography of Occidental Literature on Korea, From Early Times to 1930’ compiled in the early and mid-20th centuries by Horace Horton Underwood. Bibliographie Coréenne and Underwood’s biblioghraphy differ greatly in terms of the compilation period and recorded literature as well as the compilers. However, the compilation and composition of the two reflects the creation of an academic community and network called “Korean Studies” amid the growing trend of so-called “Field Orientalism” as the West entered East Asia in the mid-19th century. In that sense, Bibliographie Coréenne can be evaluated as an achievement that expanded the academic topography of European oriental studies, which have recognized Korea as a periphery of Chinese and Japanese studies. Although Courant’s work did not receive much response in Europe, it greatly influenced the study of Korea in the Korean Western society formed from the end of the 19th century. the Western society in Korea was able to expand its contact with Korean literature and write beyond travel accounts and observation reports through Bibliographie Coréenne. Underwood’s bibliography, compiled in 1931, was not an inheritor of Courant’s work in any apparent aspect. Underwood tried to build an academic view map of Korean studies, focusing on the works of the Western society in Korea that lasted for about 50 years at the time. However the intention of compiling originated from the experience of expanding access to Korean literature after the publication of Bibliographie Coréenne. The active discovery and release of Korean-related literature in the Western society can also be seen as an extension of the flow of emphasizing the importance of literature as reference. The motive to compile and the working process, even the patterns of its use and spread of each bibliography were completely different. Therefore, in this study, the role and its meaning of each are explained in relation to the academic topography of time and space in which the compiler was active. contribute to specifically investigating the long-term history of Korean studies in Western Europe. The comprehensive analysis with a long-term perspective of continuity will contribute to reveal the academic history of Korean studies in the West.
