Abstract
This study analyzes two autographs and a printed version of Rimbaud’s Ô saisons, ô châteaux. This poem is generally considered as a poetry of meaninglessness, without image or context, although it is generally considered as a poetic pivot of the fatal happiness of Rimbaud in his poeticevolution. This study examined the process of modification and deletion in the three editionsin order to retrace the meaning of the poem. We find that the seasons and castles, difficultto interpret, reveal the precariousness of life that we read in the comments struck out inBlaizot’s manuscript, essentially the flow and disappearance that are the poetic motif of thispoem. Also we examine a newly corrected verse, “Je suis à lui, chaque fois”, in this case a decisiveallusion to homosexuality with Verlaine, which many Rimbaldians have reported since RobertGoffin. However, the cock’s song, which explicitly suggests homosexuality, this time meansthe cock which announces the morning, in the second version of clean transcription manuscriptthat Bères possessed, and in the third version of Une saison en enfer by excluding the senseof homosexuality. At the time of writing Alchimie du verbe, Rimbaud separated from Verlaine, and he remained in the shadow or silence. One should read the version of Une saison en enferin the context of poetic happiness, that is to say in his poetic evolution of Alchimie du verbe ratherthan the happiness of homosexuality. The version of Une saison en enfer corresponds to thepoetics of “the ineffable hour” in 1872 performed by Rimbaud in the attic of the morning andin the darkest city. However, Ô saisons, ô châteaux of Alchimie du verbe pursued the alchemicalpoetic of the “étincelle d’or de la lumière nature”, but remained a poetry of silence without clarifyingor evoking its poetic fruit. In this context, this study presents our idea about the poeticprogression of Rimbaud which reaches also a poetry of silence.
