근대 초기 고소설 영역본의 번역용례 연구: J. S. 게일의 미간행 『운영전 영역본』을 중심으로

본고의 목적은 『게일 유고』소재 미간행 고소설 활자본 『운영전 영역본』의 번역저본을 확인하고 번역양상을 밝히는 것이다. 이 ‘운영전 영역본’의 번역저본은 「운영전」의 여러 이본들 중에서 최고본(最古本)이자 최선본(最善本)으로 평가받는 국립중앙도서관 소장 한문필사본 「유영전」이 매우 유력하다. 게일의 「운영전」은 국도본 「유영전」과 서사단락, 문장, 구절, 어휘 단위에서 교차 대비가 가능한 정도로 누락이 거의 없고 번역의 완성도 또한 높다. 게일의 「운영전」은 그의 미간행 고소설 영역본 14종 중 유일하게 한문본을 번역저본으로 삼는다. 게일은 국문고소설 번역보다 한문고소설 「운영전」 번역에서 한층 더 영어권 독자 중심의 번역을 지향한다. 그러면서도 그는 동양의 문화를 담기 위해 번역어를 세심하게 선택한다. 이러한 번역양상은 게일이 원문의 칠언율시 한시를 영국식 소네트로 변형하여 시의 내용과 형식을 조화롭게 할 때 정점에 이른다. 전반적으로 게일의 「운영전」은 근대 초기 한국 고소설 영역본의 뛰어난 성과물로 평가가 가능하고 그의 번역 선례는 앞으로의 한국고소 설번역에 기여할 것으로 보인다.
Abstract
This paper investigates Gale’s unpublished typed-written “The Story of Oon-yung” forthe first time in Korean academic circles. Gale’s “Oon-yung” was discovered in Box 8 of Gale’sPapers, which is a collection in the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library at the University ofToronto in Canada. The original text of Gale’s “Oon-yung” is the volume “Yoo Yung chon”in the National Library of Korea. Gale tries to translate almost all of the sentences, phrases,even words in the original text. The only exceptions are the eight Chinese poems by palacemaids. Gale’s deletion reflects the argument of some critics that they are not necessary in thenarrative development and they function only as extra ornaments of the text. In general,Gale’s “Oon-yung” can be considered an almost complete translation of the original text. It isdifficult to dichotomize Gale’s translation practices in his “Oon-yung” into literal and freetranslations. Nevertheless, Gale takes a variety of artistic liberties into the process of translationswhen necessary - such as when he translates Korean idioms and native Korean cultureand when he finds some contextual inconsistencies in the original text. Even then he tries toreflect accurately linguistic expressions and literary devices in the original text. Gale’s liberaltranslation reaches its apex when he transforms a hepta-Chinese character quatrain into anEnglish sonnet. Gale’s “Oon-yung” is one of the best translation achievements in the earlyModern period in Korea and, in the future, it will contribute to the field of Korean classicalnovel translation by setting good translation examples.
