Abstract
This study investigates how European languages have verbalized the concept Thursday from the perspective of onomasiology. In other words, this paper takes the concept Thursday as its starting point and examines how the concept has been verbalized in European languages. The core goal of this research is to uncover, through the research method of onomasiology, the lexical-semantic naming motifs with which European languages have verbalized the concept Thursday and to reveal the unique cultural elements (namely, cultureme) embedded within the verbal expressions of the concept Thursday. Achieving this research objective requires a comprehensive understanding of various linguistic disciplines such as onomasiology, phonology, morphology, word formation, lexicology, etymology, semantics, historical linguistics, and dialectology. Additionally, cultural and anthropological insights and explanations based on cultural studies, mythology, religious studies, history, (cultural) anthropology, and archeology are also essential. The names of the days of the week in European languages generally follow one of three naming methods : 1. naming method according to the planetary system, 2. naming method according to the ecclesiastical system, 3. naming method according to the mixture of planetary and ecclesiastical system. The naming method according to the planetary system is based on the ancient Babylonian tradition of worshiping the seven planets. Meanwhile, the naming method according to the ecclesiastical system is based on the ancient Jewish cultural tradition of the seven-day creation and Sabbath commandment. And the naming method based on the mixture of planetary and ecclesiastical system is literally the hybrid naming method combing the both. This research focuses on the lexical-semantic naming motifs that became the basis in the verbalization of the concept Thursday in European languages. These motifs that European languages considered when verbalizing the concept Thursday can be categorized as follows : 1. ‘Zeus + Day’, 2. ‘Jupiter + Day’, 3. ‘Thor + Day’ or ‘Donar + Day’, 4. ‘Fifth + (Day)’, and 5. ‘Fourth + (Day)’.
