Abstract
After the fall of Goguryeo, its entire territory was reorganized under the Tang dynasty’s Protectorate General to Pacify the East and transformed into the Jimifuzhou system. During this process, Tang officials were dispatched, while local populations either cooperated with the Tang’s Jimi governance or resisted through revivalist movements. Meanwhile, archaeological data from the late 7th century uncovered in the Liaodong region is generally interpreted as being utilized during the late Goguryeo and early Balhae periods. However, the question of whether these sites were continuously occupied or witnessed interruptions has yet to be thoroughly addressed. From the perspective of transitional changes, the Liaodong region in the late 7th century emerged as a space of political contention, as territorial control shifted from Goguryeo to the Tang’s Protectorate General to Pacify the East. Considering that material culture plays an active role and holds significant meaning in such transitions, a re-examination of the archaeological evidence reveals the influx of Tang material culture accompanying the Jimi governance of the Protectorate General to Pacify the East. Historical records mentioning the appointment of surrendered local elites as governors of Jimiand the designation of former Goguryeo officials such as chugeo (chiefs of local communities) as dodok (military governors), zasa(prefects), and hyollyeong (county magistrates) further indicate that late Goguryeo sites continued to be occupied even after the establishment of the Protectorate General to Pacify the East. Therefore, attempts to rigidly define or classify the national identity of the material culture in the Liaodong region during the late 7th century are ultimately unproductive. Instead, it is more important to recognize this area as a transitional borderland where the Jimi governance of the Protectorate General to Pacify the East was enforced. During this period, remnants of the Goguryeo population remained, while human and material exchanges with the Tang dynasty took place, resulting in the coexistence of indigenous and imported cultural elements. From this perspective, a more comprehensive re-evaluation of the historical and archaeological evidence from the Liaodong region is expected to enable a more detailed reconstruction of the historical narrative of this transitional period.
