Abstract

The T-shaped short handle stirrup is a type of stirrups used during the Goguryeo and Balhae periods. However, among the T-shaped short handle stirrups introduced as artifacts of Goguryeo, there are some that are argued to have been used during the Balhae period. In relation to this issue, we examined the current status of T-shaped short handle stirrups discovered at Goguryeo and Balhae sites, analyzed their characteristics classified them into types, and conducted chronological studies to determine whether they were used during the Goguryeo or Balhae periods. A total of 11 Goguryeo and Balhae T-shaped short handle stirrups were recorded. The discovery sites were examined by region: the Amnokgang (Yalu) River basin, the Hunhe (Honha) River basin, the Second Songhua River basin, the Hangang River basin, and the Zeya-Amur River basin. The stirrups with head-loop facing the side were classified as Group 1, facing the front was classified as Group 2. Based on the shape of the bow, a total of eight types were established. The chronology of each type of stirrups was mostly determined through comparison with stirrups from the Altai and Chinese regions, while associated artifacts such as the belt decorations were also taken into consideration. As a result: Group 1, Type I stirrup, such as that from the 4th Fortress of Achasan, was dated to the mid-6th century; Group 2, Types II and III stirrups, such as those from tomb No. 7 of Chaliba (Saripa) ancient burial ground and Gaoer (Goi) mountain Fortress, were dated to the late 7th to early 8th century around the founding of Balhae; Types IV and V stirrups, such as those from tomb No. 3 in the 4th section of the ancient burial ground nearby Shitaizi (Seokdaeja) mountain Fortress, the tomb No. 1 of Dongqing (Dongcheong) ancient burial ground and Bawangchao (Paewangjo) mountain Fortress, were dated to first half of 8th century; Type VI stirrups, such as those from the Lipovi Bugor ancient burial ground, were dated to the late 7th to first half 8th century; Type VII stirrup, such as that from tomb No. 6 of the Troitskoye ancient burial ground, was dated to second half of 8th to first half of 9th century; Type VIII stirrup, that is, the stirrup from the Jian (Jiban), was dated to second half 9th to first quarter of 10th century. This indicates that only Group 1, Type I stirrups clearly belong to the Goguryeo period. Therefore, the Group 2 T-shaped short handle stirrups with the head-loop facing forward which were excavated in Goguryeo and Balhae sites are considered to have been used during the Balhae period, including those dating before and after the founding of Balhae, rather than during the Goguryeo period.
