Abstract
This paper examines the excavation status of Goguryeo inscriptions and written materials and reviews future research tasks. First, the excavation status of Goguryeo inscriptions and textual materials was examined by dividing it into three periods: the late Joseon Dynasty to 1945, 1945 to the mid-1990s, and the late 1990s onwards. The results reveal that various inscriptions and written materials have been unearthed, including stele inscriptions, stone carvings, Buddhist statue inscriptions, metal vessel inscriptions, tomb inscriptions, tombstone inscriptions, inscriptions on roof tiles, pottery, and bricks, as well as seals. Goguryeo inscriptions and written materials have suffered significant damage over the long passage of time. However, tomb inscriptions and epitaphs have been well-preserved due to favorable environmental conditions. When the inscription medium is metal, pottery, roof tiles, or bricks, distinguishing between characters and cracks is generally not very difficult. In contrast, distinguishing between characters and cracks on stone steles is extremely difficult. In future stele decipherment, it is necessary to distinguish between engraved characters and cracks by paying close attention to the conditions of flaking and abrasion on the stele surface, particularly the appearance and direction of cracks around the characters. In the study of inscriptions and written materials, determining the date of creation is also crucial. Without knowing the date of creation, it is impossible to accurately understand the historical background of the inscription or written material’s production, or the nature of its narrative content. Particularly for inscriptions with extensive narratives, understanding the historical context changes depending on when the erection date is considered to be. Therefore, the erection date of an inscription requires careful consideration based on a comprehensive review of various circumstances. Inscriptions and written materials are often thought to convey historical facts as they were written by contemporaries. However, the author of the King Gwanggaeto Stele explicitly stated that the monument was erected to widely disseminate King Gwanggaeto’s military exploits to future generations. Indeed, the Gwanggaeto Stele contains numerous sections that appear exaggerated or embellished by the Goguryeo-centric worldview. Therefore, to deepen future epigraphic research, it is necessary to examine more closely the relationship between the author’s perception and historical facts.
