Abstract

In the 21st century, research on the history of Goguryeo has achieved remarkable progress. While the influence of China’s Northeast Project cannot be overlooked, this reflects the growing interest in Goguryeo history. The number of researchers has increased, more related publications have been issued, and numerous excavation results have been presented. Overall, studies on Goguryeo history have advanced and leapt forward both qualitatively and quantitatively, with research topics becoming more diverse and specialized, and controversies becoming more profound. In particular, existing materials have been reexamined, and newly discovered materials have been studied, leading to deeper and more diversified research. The proportion of studies utilizing literature, epigraphic records, and archaeological data has also relatively increased. By research topic, studies on Goguryeo inscriptions—such as epitaphs, handwritten records, and other inscriptions—have become more active, while interest in spatial studies, including cities and fortresses, has grown. Additionally, research on external relations, wars, and territorial boundaries has become prominent. The number of researchers specializing in Goguryeo history has increased, with systematic academic societies such as the Goguryeo- Balhae Research Society and expanded research projects by organizations like the Northeast Asian History Foundation becoming notable phenomena. In the 21st century, many new researchers, including PhD graduates in Goguryeo studies, have emerged, and numerous books, articles, and reports on a variety of topics have been published. Although limited, it has become possible to directly survey or explore regions in China and North Korea. New materials discovered in Korea and China have also contributed to the vibrancy of research. The diverse issues surrounding Goguryeo history clearly demonstrate the quantitative and qualitative growth of research in this field.
