Abstract
This paper aims to analyze how parody picture books portray independent female characters through visual and descriptive elements, to identify the characteristics of gender representation that differ from the traditional images of women in children’s literature, and to contemplate their educational implications on the development of gender roles in early childhood. To this end, among parody picture books reinterpreting traditional fairy tales in terms of gender equality, six books featuring independent female characters were chosen to explore visual images and descriptive elements through qualitative content analyses. The results show that such women reveal their qualities through unflinching physical representations, explicit facial expressions, and non-traditional clothes for more physical activity and by playing key roles in the stories. In addition, non-standardized colors and lines are employed to depict and interpret such women in various ways in accordance with the characteristics of the books. Women are also portrayed as entities that resolve conflicts independently or protect communities. They refuse to accept traditional gender roles or achieve self-fulfillment via role reconstruction and independent choices. These imply that parody picture books help children understand and accept gender roles in a more open-minded way and provide educational opportunities to consider gender stereotypes critically. The books are also expected to be used in early childhood education environments as fundamental data for discovering educational approaches that enhance gender sensitivity.
