Abstract
This study aims to develop an emotional competence scale for hotel employees for whom emotional competence is important, more than for employees in any other industry. To achieve this research purpose, the core competencies of hotel employees were looked into through previous studies and research was conducted through a combined research method that combined qualitative research methods and quantitative research methods utilizing emotional competence scales developed in other industry related studies. Empirical analysis deduced the following results. First, explorations were made for grounds upon which assessments can be made of the major constructs and measurement items of emotional competence through a literature review on emotional competence and results showed that most studies on hotels composed the competence of hotel employees by dividing it into the 4 dimensions of knowledge, skills, attitude, and value. Second, two interviews with experts resulted in the cataloguing of a total of 49 factors and based on this, importance analysis was conducted. As a result, 24 factors were deduced and a 110 item survey was drawn by each factor with experts, focusing on emotional competence factors according to core competencies. Third, Delphi surveys were conducted twice to conduct statistical verification on the emotional competence deduced from CQR and the 1st round of results removed a total of 31 items and the 2nd round removed a total of 15 items. Fourth, a quantitative study was conducted based on 63 items selected through a qualitative study. As a result, 10 sub-factors including 1 knowledge competence factor, 5 skill competence factors, 3 attitude competence factors, and 1 value competence factor were deduced. Fifth, final reliability and validity analysis was conducted on the total 56 items excluding the 7 items removed in the preliminary survey. As a result, 12 items were removed and as in the preliminary survey, knowledge competence drew out systematic thinking competence and skill competence drew out the 5 factors of positive atmosphere building competence, organization understanding competence, teamwork building competence, communication competence, and leadership competence. Also, with attitude competence, the 3 factors of achievement oriented competence, self-awareness and assessment competence, and impulse control competence were deduced. Lastly, value competence was tied with service value competence. An emotional competence scale that is appropriate for service businesses can be applied to industry sites in which human resource management and selection is important and the provision of a clear conceptual definition of emotional competence can contribute to academic development that can be utilized in future emotional competence studies.
