장애자녀를 둔 어머니의 장애수용은 어머니 자신뿐만 아니라 장애자녀를 포함한 가족 전체의 기능과 안녕감에 중대한 영향을 미치는 것으로 알려져 왔다. 장애수용의 이러한 중요성에 주목하여 본 연구에서는 근거이론방법을 적용하여 어머니의 장애수용 과정을 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 양육부담이 매우 무거운 장애유형인 발달장애를 가진 자녀를 둔 어머니 9명을 대상으로 심층면담을 수행하고 면접자료를 분석하였다. 패러다임 분석 결과 핵심범주는 ‘장애자녀의 어머니로서 역할을 재구성하고 세상과 당당히 대면하기’로 나타났다. 장애수용 과정은 부정, 각성, 진입, 집착, 역할재구성, 단절, 공개, 화해단계의 8단계로 나타났다. 장애수용 과정에서의 개입요인은 촉진요인으로서 영성ㆍ긍정적 성격ㆍ의미 재구성 능력과 가족ㆍ이웃ㆍ종교기관의 사회적 지지, 제한요인으로서 비현실적 기대와 가족과 사회의 배척이 확인되었다. 이러한 결과를 중심으로 상담적 시사점을 제시하였다.
Abstract
It has been recognized that mother's acceptance of their children's disability has a significant effect on mothers' functioning and psychological well-being as well as those of the family including disabled children. In view of such significance, this study attempted to inquire the process of accepting children's disability among mothers caring for developmentally disabled children in Korea. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with 9 mothers and data were analyzed using grounded theory method. The study results are as follows: First, the core category is reconstructing mothering role and gaining confidence in facing the outer world; Second, the process of accepting children's disability consists of 8 stages: denial, awareness, entry, preoccupation, reconstructing mothering role, social alienation, opening up, and reconciliation; Third, there are specific factors either facilitating or impeding this acceptance process. Facilitating factors are spirituality, positive character traits, the ability to reframe meaning, and social support. Impeding factors are unrealistic expectations, and social exclusion. On the basis of these results, counseling implications were discussed.
