Abstract
This study aimed to identify latent profiles based on elementary school teachers’ burnout and work engagement using a person-centered approach, examine predictive factors for profile membership probability, and analyze differences in psychological well-being across the identified profiles. Latent profile analysis of data from 424 elementary school teachers nationwide yielded four distinct profiles. The ‘Burned-out Resignation’ group (13.2%) showed the highest burnout and lowest work engagement, the ‘Struggling’ group (27.4%) exhibited coexistence of high burnout and work engagement, the ‘Engaged’ group (19.8%) demonstrated the lowest burnout and highest work engagement, and the ‘Adaptive’ group (38.9%) maintained average levels in both variables. Teaching experience emerged as a significant predictor of profile membership probability, with increased years of experience associated with higher likelihood of belonging to the ‘Engaged’ or ‘Adaptive’ groups compared to the ‘Struggling’ group. Psychological well-being scores were highest in the ‘Engaged’ group, followed by the ‘Adaptive’, ‘Struggling’, and ‘Burned-out Resignation’ groups, with differential patterns observed across subcategories. This study empirically supports recent theoretical perspectives suggesting that burnout and work engagement can coexist within individuals in various ways, and it is meaningful to provide the foundational data for developing tailored counseling interventions to support elementary school teachers’ psychological health.
