Abstract

This study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences of burnout and recovery among trainees preparing for the Level 1 Professional Counselor certification of the Korean Counseling Association. The Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) method was used and in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 trainees currently undergoing the certification training process. Each interview lasted approximately 60 to 90 minutes and was guided by a pre-designed set of questions. Through data analysis, four domains, twelve categories, and thirty-seven subcategories were derived. The identified causes of burnout included “overwhelming multiple roles,” “perceived limitations in counseling competence,” and “frequent experiences of discrimination due to not yet holding the Level 1 certification.” Manifestations of burnout were found to be “physical exhaustion and increased fatigue,” “accumulation of negative emotions,” and “falling into doubt.” Recovery strategies reported by participants included “expanded self-awareness,” “engagement in behaviors that support physical health,” “seeking personal methods for emotional stability,” and “enhancing efficacy through training activities.” The outcomes of recovery were identified as “deeper personal growth” and “improvement in professional competence as a Level 1 professional counselor.” Based on this analytical process, the study revealed the experiences of burnout and recovery among trainees striving to become certified Level 1 professional counselors. Implications and limitations of the study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
