Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of job-esteem and self-compassion on the relationship between social support and burnout in NGO activists. An online survey measuring Perceived Social Support through Others Scale-8 for internal and external of organization, Maslach Burnout lnventory(MBI), Job Esteem and Korean version of the Self-Compassion Scale was performed with 328 NGO activists aged 18 years or older. The collected data was analyzed using the SPSS Statistics 22.0 program and SPSS Process Macro. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, internal social support, external social support, burnout, job-esteem and self-compassion were correlated with other variables. The relationship among the variables was confirmed. Second, job-esteem and self-compassion were found to fully mediate the relationship between internal and external social support and burnout. This suggests that more social support can alleviate burnout by increasing job-esteem and self-compassion. Based on the results, this study presented theoretical and practical implications. The limitations of this study and suggestions for future studies were discussed.
