Abstract

This study conducted a meta-analysis to examine the correlations between cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) and symptoms of depression and anxiety, focusing on the CERS proposed by Garnefski et al. (2001), and to identify moderating variables that affect these relationships. A total of 65 domestic studies published between 2007 and March 2024 were analyzed. As a result, catastrophizing showed the largest effect size for both depression and anxiety. Rumination, self-blame, positive reappraisal, refocusing on planning, positive refocusing, putting into perspective, and other-blame showed moderate effects, while acceptance showed a small or non-significant effect. A significant moderating effect was found only between refocusing on planning and anxiety depending on the study population. Based on these findings, the potential for application in counseling interventions and directions for future research are discussed.
