율곡의 『순언』에 반영된 『성학집요』의 특성과 의의

Abstract

Yulgok not only expanded the research scope of the Korean history of philosophy, but also looked for the philosophy of communication through academic liberalism, by writing Suneon, the commentary to Lao-tze. This writing is designed to verify how Essence of Saint Studies, Yulgok's major work, had an influence on Suneon, or what the characteristic and meaning of Essence of Saint Studies reflected in Suneon are. Essence of Saint Studies is the best academic work showing off the maturity of Yulgok's philosophy, and precedes Suneon in writing time. In this respect, this writing is to verify the contact of mutual communication between the two works, based on it being very probable that the writing form and contents of Pure Words took root in Essence of Saint Studies. As an intellectual of Confucianism, Yulgok interpreted Lao-tze based on the viewpoint of Confucianism. Its central topic is Self-Cultivating and People-Governing(修己治人). In short, Suneon is a work interpreting Lao-tze in the context of Self-Cultivating and People-Governing, and has a significance of verifying the mutual contact between the philosophy of Confucianism and that of Lao-tze. In fact, the first half of Suneon was edited mainly for the characteristic of Inner Saint Studies(內聖學) of Self-Cultivating theory, and the latter half for Outer Saint Studies(外聖學) of People-Governing theory. There is much attention to this viewpoint, in that Suneon reflects the formal system and the characteristic contents of Essence of Saint Studies, and in that Suneon becomes a concrete basis of looking for the academic communication between Confucianism and Taoism.
