초록
This paper aims to find the meaning of ‘being swallowed’ in fairy tales. The notion of ‘being swallowed’ is not only found in fairy tales but also in ancient myths. In 1697, two different stories give examples of mother-in-laws being swallowed by animals. In Red Cap written by Perrault; the grandmother and the girl were swallowed by a wolf. Another example is found in the Grimm’s fairy tale, In The Three Little Pigs, Two little pigs were swallowed by the wolf but only one survived. In Hansel and Gretel, Hansel and Gretel eat the gingerbread house, but the witch wants to eat the children. The meaning of ‘being swallowed’ represents the ceremony of adulthood in the characteristic of death and rebirth. When children's readers read a fairy tale, they experience separation from a familiar world, inducing an uncanny feeling.
