This study aims to clarify the aspect of strategic use of ‘terms of address’ from the perspective of sociolinguistics. In everyday conversation, people strategically employ specific address terms distinguished from the usual normative usage showing their attitude such as intimacy, respect, or distance in order to achieve the goal of the conversation. The strategic use of address terms may be even more pronounced in some novels which depict our daily lives more intensively. In this regard, the data has been collected from the novel Great Expectations. The result shows that instead of general polite terms, impolite address terms were frequently chosen strategically to signify distance or familiarity between characters. As the relationship of characters changes, there are considerable variations in address term use even in the conversation between the same characters by changing their relationship in terms of power or solidarity.
