Abstract

In this research, methods that are used for testing moderated mediation were reviewed and the main methods that were used in HRD research were investigated. Results of the analysis on 37 studies can be summarized as follows: First, for testing linear moderated mediation model, using the index of moderated mediation was recommended by scholars. However, it was found that comparing the significance of conditional indirect effects was the main method used in HRD research. Second, when a single variable moderates both paths that compose a mediation model, caution is required because quadratic moderated mediation effects can appear. Studies testing this type of model were also found in this research. However, the statistical methods used to test unlinear moderation were not sufficiently rigorous. Finally, the difference between a moderated mediation model and a mediated moderation model consists in the intention of the study and interpretation of the results. However, there was still confusion regarding how to differentiate these models in several studies. These findings suggest that a clearer understanding on the concept of moderated mediation and the methods that can be used to test the model is required among the scholars in the field of HRD.
