Abstract

Born into a prominent Andalusian family, Ibn Hazm was forced to embrace the politically turbulent times of the Umayyad Caliphate and its fragmentation into smaller kingdoms. These experiences are fully reflected in his religious, philosophical, and literary studies and works. His ideological outlook is primarily characterized by the theological aspect of the Zahiri school. While his Zahiri school never developed into a mainstream theological school, it remains a significant minority within Islamic jurisprudence. Ibn Hazm's most representative work is "The Dove Necklace." In this work, he presents his views on love in a perfect harmony of elegant and sophisticated Arabic prose and lyrical poetry. Divided into thirty chapters, he describes the journey of love from its beginning to its end, each chapter's theme is explained in prose and interspersed with appropriate poetry, meticulously expressing the nuances of love's emotions. "The Dove's Necklace" transcends time, exploring the universality of human nature and emotion. Its sentiments, not limited to those of Andalus at the time, resonate with many today, even after a thousand years. Therefore, "The Dove's Necklace" is not simply a tale of love in 11th-century Andalus, but a profound reflection on eternal love and human existence, a work that holds a unique place in the annals of Arabic literature.
