초록
D. H. Lawrence’s ‘Education of the People’, despite its textual complexity, records his practical and ideological engagement with existing narratives on education since the Edwardian reformation. Lawrence singles out the 1918 Fisher Act, which is seen as the culmination of the Edwardian reformation on education, and explores its legacy of the industrial capitalism and progressive liberalism. The author stages the oscillation of his contemporary educational narratives between these two ideological opponents, and reflects on their failure to respond to ‘a new education’. In so doing, Lawrence offers an alternative, which is heavily indebted to the psychology at the early stage in Britain. This combination of practical diagnosis and psychological alternative in ‘Education of the People’ often misleads about the origin of Lawrence’s essay, that is, the writer’s arguments about real politics on education and their ideological backgrounds. Here Lawrence’s ‘Education of the People’ urges us to read it historically and socially.
Abstract
