초록

As the first English novelist to benefit from the Education Act of 1870, which sought to make elementary education universally available to its English citizens, Lawrence taught in the British public school system from 1908 to 1911. By suppressing the individuality and respecting only public virtues, the mechanical educational system pointed out only “equality” and “standards,” which destroyed and endangered the individual. Based on his experiences, he had a unique view on education, critically reflected in his works and he offered education alternatives in his essays. This paper examines his perspectives and solutions in The Rainbow and his essays, especially “Education of the People,” and reveals that he saw the public education as unconcerned with authentic self growth. Additionally, my examination pays attention to Lawrence’s thoughts on the individual and society related to the educational system, while studying his ideas. He insisted that the living self should have one purpose only: to come into its own fullness of being, and that all education should tend against the fixed mechanical automatism and support its own spontaneous desire and impulse.
