초록
This article aims to trace and examine the views on education of D. H. Lawrence and T. S. Eliot, based on Lawrence’s “Education of the People” and Eliot’s The Aims of Education. Focusing on the definition of education, the purpose of education, and the ideal of equality of educational opportunity, this article is to explore the similarity and difference between Eliot’s view and Lawrence’s one on education. In the process, the ideas of personality, individualism, equality, and standardization will be closely explored through Lawrence’s insightful view, whereas the conflict of Eliot’s view on individuality and standardization will be reconsidered. Especially, the big difference between Eliot’s “universal standardization in education” and Lawrence’s “the pure individual spontaneity” in education will be shown. In the result of this study, this article will uncover how profound and sensible Lawrence is, unlike Eliot’s harsh criticism of Lawrence in his preface of D. H. Lawrence and Human Existence. In addition, Lawrence’s extraordinary insight as well as his supreme intelligence will be re-examined.
