Abstract

This paper seeks to clarify Sartre’s theory of ethics based on his existential analysis of technics and freedom in Being and Nothingness. In contrast to Heidegger who tries to develop the Kantian notion of transcendence ontologically further by eliminating the remnants of Cartesian philosophy of consciousness from Kant’s philosophy, Sartre wants to make the philosophical verification of the human consciousness as an absolute being to a solid groundwork for a phenomenological ontology. The main claim of this paper is that Sartre, similar to Kant of Critique of Practical Reason, begins his philosophical investigation from the ethical viewpoint. According to Sartre, the Cartesian cogito must be acknowledged as the only philosophically legitimate way to come to the concrete relationship between human beings. That means that only through the understanding of the absolute beingness of my consciousness, I can really understand why I come into conflict with other human beings: The conflict between me and other human beings is based on my acknowledgement that they also have their own consciousness, live as beings-for-themselves, which means that they can ontologically be characterized as an endeavor to become the absolute being. In this sense, the consciousness functions as an quasi-substantial entity, and therefore it can be pointed out that Sartre’s Dasein bears a close parallel to the Cartesian Cogito. Sartre’s ethical concern is an underlying cause for it. According to Sartre, I can endeavor to emancipate myself from the serious spirit which dominates the ordinary world and reduces the meaning of both my own being and the transcendent world to a theoretical structure of technologically meaningful concepts. To some extent, Sartre’s argument sounds like that of Kant who demonstrates that we should inevitably presuppose the real existence of the metaphysical ideas such as God, freedom and soul in our practical life in a community.
