Abstract

Pup-Jeong, a Buddhist monk, is one of the most influential writers in the modern Korean Society. His essays published since 1970 has formed a part of our Zeitgeist. This article focuses on the disclosure of meaning and limitations of Pup-Jeong’s works and the contemporary Korean consciousness represented by him. His thought is called non-possession, which claims that possession makes us unhappy. It seems to be contrary to our common sense, because we believe that the more we have, the better we live. To be wealthy or have more goods, we have to endure the bondage in body and the stress in mind. Pup-Jeong suggests that we should not pursue possession in order to avoid such pain and instead we can find happiness in the dialogue with nature. But the denial of possession include, I think, self-deception, which pretends that wealth is bad for our happiness while believing that money is good. Analysing self-deception and hypocrisy of the non-possession thought based on Hegel’s criticism of Stoicism, I discuss its benefits to the Korean society and at the same time, its limitations. The non-possession thought has offered comfort and security blanket to Korean people nearly for 40 years, but blocked the entrance to the real world. I consider Aristotelian view of happiness in an effort to overcome Pup-Jeong’s thought. According to Aristotle, happiness is the fulfillment of human potentials. His conception of happiness does not deny the outer possession’s world and see it as a stage for realizing human dreams.
