Abstract
Both M. Heidegger and Keiji Nishitani strived to overcome the Western metaphysics, although they respectively launched their ways of thinking from different angles due to their respective difference of culture and thoughts. What they have in common is the thought of no-thing-ness, which functioned as an important medium for overcoming it. Both of them issued a question of no-thing-ness and in doing so opened possibilities of a new thought. However, the ways they understood the no-thing-ness are not the same. for they had different goals of thoughts. Heidegger questioned the western ontology, which originally derived from the Greek thoughts and reached its climax at the modern philosophy, and attempted to overcome the western metaphysical tradition from his perspective of epistemology and thought, whereas Nishitani tried to overcome it with his religious perspectives of salvation and nirvana by the medium of the notion of the absolute nothingness in his Zen Buddhism. The author displays a comparison between both of them and wants to show the differences, especially from Nishitani’s interpretations of Heidegger and R. Descartes. In doing so, the author aims at a clearer understanding of the notion of the no-thing-ness in Heidegger and Nishitani.
