죽음이란 무엇일까? 엘리자베스 퀴블러 로스(Elisabeth Kübler Ross. 1926-2004)에 따르면, ‘죽음’의 경험은 ‘출생’의 경험과 같다. 죽음은 다른 존재로 새롭게 탄생하는 것이다. 인간의 몸은 고치에 비유될 수 있다. 우리의 몸은 오직 잠시 살기 위한 집에 지나지 않기 때문에 참 자아는 아니다. 상징적으로 표현하자면, 죽음은 그저 한 집에서 더 아름다운 집으로 옮겨가는 것이다. 고치(몸)가 회복불능의 상태가 되면, 나비(영혼)가 태어난다. 이것이 바로 메타모퍼시스이다. 퀴블러 로스의 죽음에 관한 성찰이 철학자 에른스트 카시러(Ernst Cassirer 1874-1945)의 관점과 잇닿아 있다. 다만 퀴블러 로스의 죽음 이해를 문화철학적, 문화해석학적 시선에서 원시인의 심성과 신화적 사유의 고유한 특징을 분석함으로써 죽음 현상의 인식적 근거를 제공하는 이가 바로 카시러이다. 그래서 우리는 먼저 카시러를 주목하고자 한다. 우리는 이 글에서 일차적으로 문화철학의 관점에서 죽음의 문제를 논의하는 카시러의 안내를 받아 원시인의 신화적 사유에 근거한 지각의 방식과 공간의 이해를 중점적으로 다룰 것이다. 또한 이러한 원시인의 삶의 양식과 태도에서 죽음의 문제를 논의할 것이다. 이어서 정신의학과 호스피스 운동의 관점에서 죽음을 논의하는 퀴블러 로스의 안내를 받아 죽음의 현상, 죽음의 실체, 죽음의 의미, 더불어 삶의 교훈에 대해 하나씩 살펴보고자 한다.
Abstract
What is death? According to Elisabeth Kubler Ross(1926–2004), the experience of death is similar to the experience of birth. To express symbolically, death is a transition from one house to another, for example, from a cocoon to meadows in the case of butterflies. Therefore, death is an escape from a d welling, such as a butterfly escaping from its cocoon, which is referred to as metamorphosis. In his philosophy of culture, Ernst Cassirer(1874–1945) has grasped the concept of death as metamorphosis. He focused on primitives’ mentality and the characteristics of a mythical thought to understand death. Through this discussion, Cassirer suggests a cognitive foundation of the phenomena of death. In this context, we will analyze the meaning, substance, and phenomena of death in terms of Elisabeth Kubler Ross’s hermeneutics of death. Accordingly, the purpose of this article is to provide an explanation of death as metamorphosis. We will also discuss death in terms of the lifestyle and attitude of primitives. Finally, we will explain the phenomena, factuality, and meaning and message of death.
