레비나스와 지제크의 사랑 개념 비교 연구: 에로스와 아가페의 변증법적 관계를 중심으로

이 논문은 사랑의 감정을 둘러싸고 펼쳐지는 오늘날의 다양한 문제 해결을 위한 이론적 토대를 마련하고자 현대철학자 레비나스와 지제크의 사랑 이론을 아가페적 사랑과 에로스적 사랑의 상관관계의 관점에서 비교 고찰한다. 이를 위해 우선 아가페적 사랑을 우위에 놓고 그것과 에로스적 사랑을 비교함으로써 오늘날의 에로스와 아가페 비교 연구의 초석을 다진 신학자 니그렌의 연구를 고찰한 다음 그 결과를 토대로 그와 유사하기는 하지만 두 사랑을 상호배제적 관점이 아니라 상호보완적 관점에서 파악한 레비나스의 아가페 이론을 집중적으로 분석하였다. 다른 한편 정신분석학의 창시자인 프로이트가 어떻게 에로스적 사랑을 근원적인 것으로 파악하고 아가페적 사랑이 불가능함을 주장했으며 그의 이러한 경향이 프로이트로의 회귀를 외쳤던 라캉에게서 어떻게 계승되는지를 간략하게 살펴보았다. 그 결과에 따라서 오늘날 가장 주목받는 철학자 중 한 사람인 지제크가 어떻게 이들의 견해를 계승하여 에로스적 사랑을 여전히 중시하면서도 아가페적 사랑을 긍정적으로 평가하는 독특한 관점을 제시하여 오늘날의 수많은 정치적, 사회적 문제 해결을 위한 근원적 개념으로 제시하는지를 상세하게 고찰하였다. 그 결과 두 철학자 모두 아가페와 에로스의 상관관계에 주목하고 있지만, 레비나스는 아가페, 지제크는 에로스에 방점을 두고 자신들의 논의를 전개하고 있음을 확인했다. 하지만 이 두 철학자의 이론은 하나의 사랑 개념만으로는 오늘날의 수많은 문제를 해결하기 위한 감정철학적 토대를 마련할 수 없다는 사실을 제시하고 있다. 이 점에서 앞으로도 이와 관련된 철학적 논의가 놓쳐서는 안 되는 매우 중요한 시사점을 그들의 사랑 이론에서 발견할 수 있다는 것이 필자의 확신이다.
Abstract
To lay the theoretical foundations for solving many of today’s problems, this paper compares the love theories of Levinas and Žižek from the perspective of the relationship between Agape and Eros. We first analyzed the work of Swedish theologian Anders Nygren, who founded the contemporary comparative study of Eros and Agape, then closely examined Levinas’s Agape theory, which is similar to that of Nygren’s but does not exclude Eros. We also briefly looked at Freud, who considered Eros a fundamental element of his psychoanalytic theory and argued that Agape is impossible. This position was inherited by Lacan, who called for a return to Freud. We then explored in detail Žižek’s argument that Agape and Eros are key to solving many of today’s political and social problems. His unique perspective values Eros while also positively evaluating Agape. We thus show that both philosophers pay attention to the correlation between Agape and Eros, with Levinas focusing on Agape and Zizek on Eros. However, their theories suggest that one concept of love cannot, on its own, lay the foundations for solving current sociopolitical problems. To conclude, this paper shows that Levinas’s and Žižek’s approach to Eros and Agape contains very important implications for related philosophical discussions.
