초록

Traditional anthropocentrism is often disregarded in environmental debates because it has led to a view of non-human nature as devoid of inner value. This paper investigates Jonas attempt to conceive of future environmental ethics. Jonas starts from the traditional assumption that having freedom constitutes grounds for the ascription of inner worth, but he then expands the notion of freedom to all living organisms. Jonas’s expansion of the notion of freedom as “purposive causality” will be reconstructed and defended, but his ultimate foundation of the claim to inner worth in “Nature’s striving” is critically rejected. Instead, this paper will argue that an “ethic-centric” re-reading of the anthropocentric tradition that underlies Kant’s account of the inner worth of humans can be combined with the insights of Hans Jonas’s environmental ethics. This attempt will lead to an ethical outlook that is more fruitful and epistemologically stronger than choosing between the false alternatives of Anthropocentrism or Anti-Anthropocentrism.
