『성의 역사』에서 보이는 푸코의 ‘문제화’ 탐구: 『성의 역사』 1권에서 2권 이후로의 이행을 중심으로

본 논고는 ‘문제화’라는 키워드를 통해 푸코의 『성의 역사』 1권에서 2권 이후로의 이행을 설명하고자 한다. 『성의 역사』 1권은 성에 대한 권력이 성을 억압하기보다는 성을 생산하며 작동한다는 것을 보인다. 이를 통해 푸코는 성이 억압되어있다는 현대 서구사회의 일반적 문제가 정말로 문제인 것이 아니라, 문제로 만들어진 것이라 주장한다. 그렇다면 성을 다른 방식으로 문제화하는 것도 가능할까? 푸코는『성의 역사』 2권 이후에서 성적 쾌락에 대한 다른 식의 문제화가 있었고, 주체가 자기 자신과 맺는 관계 또한 달랐음을 역사적으로 탐구한다. 푸코의 이런 『성의 역사』는 현재 우리가 마주하는 성에 대한 문제화가 필연적이지 않다는 것을 ‘역사적’으로 증명함으로써 다른 방식의 문제화가 가능하며, 성적 주체로서 우리가 새로운 방식으로 우리 자신과 관계 맺을 수 있음을 시사한다는 점에서 푸코가 제시하는 ‘자유’가 어떤 형태인지 그려볼 수 있게 한다.
Abstract
Through the concept of “problematization,” this article explains the transition of History of Sexuality from volume 1 to volume 2 and beyond. Showing that the mechanism of power is not about repression but about reproduction, Foucault argues that the problem of sexuality repression, which is a common dilemma in modern Western society, is not a real problem but a problem made into a problem. Then, is it possible to problematize sexuality in other ways? From the second volume, Foucault points out that there are other kinds of problematizations of sexuality and other kinds of relations the subject has with oneself. History of Sexuality allows us to understand Foucault’s view of freedom; that is, Foucault suggests that there are other ways of problematizations of sexuality and other ways of relations to oneself by proving in a “historical” way that the problematization we currently face is not necessary.
