푸코 사유체계에서 자유의 위상

『감시와 처벌』에서 푸코는 규율권력을 분석하면서 자발적 예속화라는 특수한 주체화 방식을 드러낸다. 그런데 푸코의 분석처럼 권력이 내면화됨으로써 늘앞서서 승리한다면, 푸코의 권력이론에는 자유의 가능성이 존재하지 않을 것이다. 『지식의 의지』에서 푸코는 자신의 권력이론을 다듬으면서 이 문제에 응답하려 하지만, 푸코가 어디에나 존재한다고 이야기하는 자유의 위상에 대해 자세하게 설명하지 않는다. 본 논문은 푸코 사유체계 내에서 이러한 자유가 정합적으로 이해될 수있는지 연구한다. 그 과정에서 나는 푸코의 자유는 실체나 소여가 아닌 자유-권력복합체임을 밝히고, 자발적 예속화에도 불구하고 자유를 사유할 수 있는 한 가지방법을 제안한다. 끝으로 자유의 가능 조건과 함께 푸코 사유의 한계를 검토한다.
Abstract
In Discipline and Punish, Foucault analyzes the disciplinary power and discusses a particular mode of subjectivation called “spontaneous subjection”. However, as Foucault discussed, if power always occupies the subject in advance by internalizing, the possibility of freedom would not exist in his theory of power. In The Will to Knowledge, Foucault tries to respond to this issue by refining his theory of power, but he doesn't go into detail about the position of freedom which is to be everywhere according to Foucault. This paper examines whether the conception of freedom can be coherently understood within Foucault's system of thought. I clarify that Foucault's freedom should be understood as “freedom-power complex”, rather than a substance or given. I also suggest a way to consider freedom in Foucault despite of spontaneous subjection. By showing the condition for possibility of freedom, the limitation Foucault’s thought entails is explained in this paper.
