초록

이 글은 미셀 푸코의 마지막 5년 동안의 이론을 살펴봄으로써 이 시기의 푸코 사상의 전체적 윤곽을 드러내는 데 목적이 있다. 1970년대 후반 『성의 역사 1－앎의 의지』를 전후로 푸코는 자신의 권력 개념을 규율, 전쟁, 생명정치, 안전, 통치성의 관점에서 지속적으로 확장하고 정교하게 다듬어 갔다. 하지만 80년대 들어 푸코는 자신의 방법과 탐구 주제를 새롭게 변경한다. 그는 탐구 주제와 영역을 고대 그리스 로마 시대의 삶의 철학과 초기 그리스도교 사상으로 이동하는 한편, 이를 탐구하기 위한 문제설정에서도 ‘권력에서 통치로’ 전환한다. 권력에서 통치로의 전환은 무엇보다 주체화와 그 계보를 탐구하는 방식에 큰 영향을 끼친다. 우선 권력의 관점에서는 주체가 지식과 관련해서 어떻게 구성되는가 하는 데 주된 초점이 주어져 있다면, 통치의 관점에서는 진실과의 관계 속에서 주체가 어떻게 스스로를 구성하는가 하는 것이 초점의 대상이 된다. 전자의 관점에서 주체가 규율과 생명정치의 대상이 되는 예속화가 중요했다면, 후자의 관점에서는 주체가 자기와 자기, 자기와 타자 간의 관계를 변형시키는 주체화의 과정이 중요해진다. 이 글은 80년대 푸코의 사상과 이론에 나타난 이러한 변화의 전체적 과정을 탐구하면서 그것이 갖는 의미를 살펴보고자 한다.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal the overall configuration of Michel Foucault's theory during his last five years before his untimely death in 1984. After the publication of The History of Sexuality, Vol. 1: the Will to Knowledge in 1976, Foucault continued to expand and elaborate his concept of power from the perspective of discipline, war, biopolitics, security, and governmentality. But in the 1980s, Foucault changes his methods and research topics again. He moves the themes of inquiry into the philosophy of Ancient Greece, Hellenism, Rome, and Early Christian periods, and also tries to make a shift from power to government as the method for exploring it. The shift from power to government has an important impact on the thinking of subjectivity and its genealogy. Above all, the main focus changes from the question of how the subject is constituted to the question of how the subject constructs itself.It means that if what is important in the former is subjection, in which the subject is controlled by discipline and biopolitics, subjectivation in which the subject transforms the relationship between self and oneself, self and others, is essential in the latter. This article critically examines at once this change in Foucault's ideas and theories in the 1980s and the meaning of its effect on present reality.
