Abstract

Activism today tends to be accepted by people as a kind of “cultural (festival) movement”. However, activism has its starting point and ending in social reform and change. Until the 1970s, the concepts of “revolution” and “resistance” were widely mentioned among leftist intellectuals. However, in the 1990s, these concepts were economically assimilated and purified, and their political color was diluted, and they were simply dressed up as “activism”. Philosophically, activism is an extension of Marxism and critical theory. Since 1990, when globalization took off, activism has been evolving and combining with Southern epistemology, decolonial studies, postmodern studies, Third World studies, and alternative globalization theory, and has taken the lead in suggesting a “better world” and a “different world (without any discrimination)” for the future of humanity. Philosophical activism fundamentally considers global issues with “humanity” as the parameter, so it is characterized as a “collective social movement” and a “knowledge movement”, and the importance of solidarity and the ethical practice of ‘global public good’ are always emphasized. Ultimately, activism aims to improve and reform the abnormality, immorality, injustice, and inequality that are rampant throughout the world. In this study, we will reevaluate H. Marcuse's (1898-1979) One-Dimensional Man as a theoretical starting point for neoactivism. According to Marcuse, in a one-dimensional society, the irrational completely replaces the realm of the rational. As a result, distorted and inverted logic and values are accepted by people as the “normality” of society. Therefore, we, as ‘social beings’, have the responsibility to reject and resist this one-dimensional society. This is why we are trying to re-evaluate Marcuse, who is also evaluated as the “prophet of the ‘Great Refusal’” (J.-L. Loubet del Bayle), as a thinker of neo-activism and neo-humanism.
