Abstract

This article investigates the original texts and the editing process of Samguksagi Baekjebongi. In case the original texts about the time before the reign of King Geunchogo of Baekjebongi were one of Baekje’s own transmitted materials, their basic original texts were the records in Seogi, which is a book compiled by Goheung. However, it can be confirmed that the articles regarding 6-Jwoapyeong, 16-official ranks, 5-Bu and Bukhansan castle were edited afterwards. In the late 630s or the early 640s which were during the reign of King Mu or Euja respectively, the Baekje people began to recognize the Onjo as their founding father, not Gui(仇台) as they did before. Simultaneously, they rearranged their history. It seems that was the exact time that they inserted the records that indicate 6-Jwoapyeong and 16-Official ranks were adopted in the reign of King Goi or Baekje still possessed the Han River region at that time. The editor of Gusamguksa compiled the records about Baekje, and the book’s source texts were the history books that were rewritten during the latter period of Baekje. Using Gusamguksa as a basic framework, the compiler of Samguksagi inserted the records regarding Baekje which were included in Chinese history books, Sillabongi and also added the excerpts from antique records and other transmission records into Baekjebongi. As supplementary references, the editor also introduced different opinions about King’s name and national founding father of Baekje, and presented some questionable contents among the records of Chinese historian or the records of Baekjebongi that needed elaboration as well. Finally, he completed Baekjebongi by inserting his criticism about the behavior of King and officials or a general critique of Baekje history based on his Confucian cause-oriented point of view.
