Constructing the Myth of Qing as the Other in Late 19th Century Korea: An Analysis of Tongnip Sinmun(The Independent) Articles Related to Qing

1896년에 서재필의 주도로 창간된『독립신문』은 조선 최초의 민간지로서 백성에게 국내외의 사정을 알렸으며 대외인식도 새롭게 심어 주었다. 그 중에 청국에 대한 보도가 여러 칼럼에서 대폭적으로 이루어졌으며, 당시의 조선 백성에게 전과 다른 면모를 가진 청국을 재현하였다고 할 수 있다. 필자가 바로 본고에서『독립신문』의 ‘논설’란뿐만 아니라 기타 칼럼에서 게재된 청국 관련 기사도 체계적으로 고찰하며, 기사를 텍스트로 간주하여 내용적·서사적 측면에서 분석함으로써『독립신문』에서 청국이 어떻게 재현되는지를 규명하고자 한다. 그 결과『독립신문』의 편집진은 청국을 지칭하는 데 종래의 ‘중국’과 ‘중화’ 등 명칭을 배제하며, ‘청국’을 유의적으로 선택함으로써 중국을 대표하는 새로운 기호로 부각시켰다. 또는 이 기호를 둘러싸 새로운 신화를 구축하였으며, ‘청국’을 세계에서 서구와 대비된 수동적·소극적 타자, 조선에서 부정적이며 배척해야 하는 대상으로 신문지에서 재현하였다. 이는 조선시대 이래 형성된 긍정적 ‘중국’·‘중화’ 신화가 타파된 과정일 뿐만 아니라 후일 부정적 ‘청국’ 신화의 확산을 가능하게 만든 기반이라 할 수 있다.
Abstract
With its establishment led by Seo Jae-pil(徐載弼) in 1896, Tongnip Sinmun(The Independent) was Korea’s first unofficial newspaper which delivered the current local and international news to the public, thus reinventing people’s perception of the world outside Korea. Notably, its various columns extensively covered Qing(淸), which constructed a different image of the dynasty to the Koreans. This thesis attempts to explore how Qing was presented in Tongnip Sinmun by systematically examining the coverage of Qing done not only the ‘editorials’ but also the other columns of the newspaper and analyzing the articles as texts for their contents and narratives. In referring to Qing, the editors of Tongnip Sinmun significantly chose Cheongguk(淸國) and brought it to fore as a new symbol representing China, while ruling out such names as the previously used Jungguk(中國) and Junghwa(中華). Tongnip Sinmun constructed a new myth around the symbol, thus rendering Qing as a passive and negative other in contrast with the West, as also, an object that should be avoided in Korea. This process not only dismantled the myth of a positive Jungguk and Junghwa, which had been formed through the Joseon period but also created the basis for the later spread of the negative myth about Cheongguk.
