Abstract
As a media outlet established by Japan in Joseon Korea, The Hansung Shinbo aimed to foster a pro-Japanese sentiment and tarnish the image of the Qing China. The newspaper covered the First Sino-Japanese War through retrospectives, post-war analyses of Qing's situation, and observations on the Yiwei War. Building upon previous research on The Hansung Shinbo's limited attention to international events and the historical value of its coverage of the First Sino-Japanese War, this study finds that: The Hansung Shinbo sought to showcase Japan's military achievements during the First Sino-Japanese War and the subsequent Yiwei War to highlight its formidable military power. It also conveyed narratives of the collapse of the Beiyang Fleet, the intensification of internal conflicts in the Qing court following Li Hongzhang's decline, and deliberately exaggerated the collapse of Qing forces and the Taiwanese resistance. These efforts undermined the perception of the Qing among Korean audiences to a certain extent. However, by explicitly revealing Japan's post-war expansionist plans, attempting to intimidate the Korean populace, and adopting a defensive stance in favor of Japan, the newspaper provoked strong dissatisfaction in Korea, ultimately producing counterproductive outcomes.
