초록
This study explores the symbol of the historicity, locality, and identity of Gaesung which has lasted for 600 years through the Chosun Dynasty period. The objects which are attractive in the Gaesung sightseeing are the capital's relics in the Goryeo period, Buddhist remains, the natural landscape and so on. In particular, the representative symbols of them are the Yeonboksa temple and Five-storied wooden pagoda established in the early Goryeo. These were major landmarks of Gaesung. After the wooden pagoda had been collapsed in the late Goryeo, the reconstruction of it was attempted between the late Goryeo and the early Chosun. In that respect, King Kongyang and Chosun’s Taejo made great efforts politically. It might be so, but merchants in Gaesung also helped to finish the reconstruction by supporting riches. The very this point is important. Their identity was stronger than tradespeople’s in any other region. But the wooden pagoda burned down in the mid-Chosun, and the temple was destroyed in the late Chosun. The Gaesung people, however, nursed the intense desire to remember Gaesung, and endeavored to be aware of their identity by recording the emblem of history, namely the locality since the fall of Goryeo. It seems that they looked forward to the revival of their locality and identity by reconstructing the Yeonboksa temple and the wooden pagoda.
