Abstract

The purpose of this study is to first, examine the relationship between Korea/Koreans and the Yasukuni Shrine issue, with a special focus on the enshrinement of Koreans at Yasukuni. Second, the study looks at changes in the Korean society’s perception of the issue over time by analyzing the responses of the Korean media, government, and the National Assembly. Mobilizing citizens for war and inducing loyalty to the state by glorifying and memorializing the war dead as patriotic martyrs is not an issue confined to Japan; it is an issue shared by all modern nation-states, including Korea. Nevertheless, there is an aspect of the Yasukuni Shrine issue that is unique and particular. Koreans who are enshrined at Yasukuni were Japanese colonial subjects who had been mobilized for war against their will. Moreover, they were enshrined under the Japanese family and given names they had been forced to adopt as per Japan’s colonial policy. Finally, they were enshrined as Japanese citizens who had “sacrificed themselves for the country (Japan).” Therefore, the enshrinement of Koreans at Yasukuni legitimizes Japan’s colonial rule over Korea. Accordingly, the Yasukuni Shrine issue must be approached as a matter pertaining to the resolution of Japan’s colonial occupation of Korea. The Japanese government denied Koreans postwar compensation on the grounds that their citizenship had changed from Japanese to Korean. Nevertheless, the Japanese government provided Yasukuni Shrine with the personal information of the Korean soldiers, thereby making their enshrinement possible. Nonetheless, the Japanese government and the judiciary have yet to acknowledge their accountability in the matter. Be that as it may, the Korean government, National Assembly, and the media have not paid much heed to the Yasukuni Shrine issue. This is because the Korean society has only regarded the issue as a standard for gauging the historical understanding of Japanese politicians.
