Abstract

Contemporary Korean funeral practices include various elements whose origins and meanings remain ambiguous, yet there has been insufficient critical scrutiny of their historical backgrounds. This study investigates whether key components of Korean funerals—namely hemp burial robes, mourning armbands, and chrysanthemum floral arrangements—are remnants of Japanese colonial influence. The findings indicate that although hemp burial robes existed during the Joseon Dynasty, their institutionalization as the standard attire occurred after the promulgation of the 1934 Japanese colonial protocol on ritual simplification and resource conservation. Mourning armbands, often regarded as a colonial remnant, are more accurately rooted in Western funeral customs introduced to Korea before or during the early colonial period. Chrysanthemum floral arrangements were not introduced during the colonial era but appear to have become established in Korea under the influence of modern Japanese funeral aesthetics and visual culture. This paper reassesses these cultural elements by analyzing their historical trajectories and degrees of coercion or voluntary adoption, aiming to provide a critical framework for the decolonization of Korean funeral culture.
