Abstract

This study aims to reexamine the significance and changing status of Gulsansa temple during the Unified Silla period, with a particular focus on its connection to the Myeongju region. Although Gulsansa is located approximately 5 kilometers south of the administrative center of Myeongju (modern-day downtown Gangneung), it is noteworthy that the site itself was also under the direct jurisdiction of the Myeongju provincial office. The establishment of Gulsansa was significantly influenced by the figure referred to as "Governor Kim of Myeongju" (溟州都督金公) in the records of Beom-il’s residence at the temple. Contrary to previous interpretations that identified this individual as a descendant of Kim Ju-won, there is little evidence to support this view or to suggest that rebels were appointed as provincial governors. Thus, it is more plausible that Governor Kim was a government-appointed official sent by the Unified Silla government, indicating that the founding of Gulsansa was backed by central political authority. By the mid-ninth century, as seen in examples such as the Heungjeon-ri Temple Site in Samcheok, Silla temples functioned not only as centers for religious integration but also played roles in managing transportation routes and overseeing local populations. Considering such precedents, along with the location and founding context of Gulsansa, it can be inferred that the temple served a dual function—beyond religious purposes—to assist in the practical governance and control of the Myeongju region. Under the patronage of the Unified Silla government, Beom-il was able to establish influence over the Buddhist community in the greater Myeongju area, centering on Gulsansa. However, with the decline of central control and Beom-il's death, Gulsansa appears to have rapidly lost its prominence. Notably, neither Beom-il’s disciple Gaecheong, who was present at his death, nor Haengjeok, another of his disciples, are recorded as being active at Gulsansa after Beom-il’s passing. Likewise, in the early Goryeo period, none of the monks from the Gulsan School, who were associated with Gaecheong or Haengjeok, seem to have continued activities centered on Gulsansa. Archaeological evidence indicates that the main phase of the Gulsansa Temple Site dates to the 12th to 13th centuries, suggesting that the temple did not regain its former status until it was later reconstructed during the early Goryeo period.
