Abstract
Many Sajoks(士族) settled in the Cheongju region early on. They established a socioeconomic foundation, passed literary licentiate examination(司馬試) and the civil service examination for the literary class(文科), and formed the ruling order of the noble families by operating Yuhyangso(留鄕所), Hyanggyos(鄕校), and Seowons(書院). 105 surnames produced 565 of Saengwon(生員) and Jinsa(進士). There were 140 successful candidates in the civil service examination from 51 clans. After establishing Sinhang Seowon(莘巷書院) in the third year of King Seonjo’s reign(1570), they established many Seowons, including Nobong Seowon, Geomdam Seowon, and Songcheon Seowon, thereby strengthening their political and social status. The figures produced in Cheongju are well recorded in various local histories. There were 13 loyal subjects, 58 filial sons, and 23 chaste women. Three loyal subjects, excluding Ra Sa-jong, who died a patriotic martyr to the Jurchen, who Kim Seon-bok, Park Woo-hyeon, and Park Chun-ran, died a patriotic martyr during the Imjin War, and eight subjects, including Kim Si-yak, Ji Yeo-hae, Song Si-yeong, and Oh Dae-nam, died a patriotic martyr during the Manchu War. Of the 13 loyal subjects, eight were later honored with a memorial tablet. The filial sons of Cheongju Mok include 37 people, including Gyeongyeon, Byeongbok, Jo Gang, and Yeon Choi Jeok, and the filial sons of Munui Hyeon include 21 people, including Kwon Mongnam, Oh Sangjin, and Ryu Heungryong. Among the filial sons, 26 received a memorial tablet, and 18 were given official positions.
