(The Influence of the Sea on the Political History of Japan)』이다.
Abstract
Until now, the western assessment of Admiral Yi Sun-sin which is well-known in Korea has been related to how western historians have considered Admiral Yi admirable. This atmosphere has not been different in Korean academic societies. Most studies have just focused on the Admiral Yi’s reputation in the world without considering the purpose of mentioning him. Therefore, this study tries to avoid this old perspective. Also, it tries to look at the western literature related to Admiral Yi from an objective perspective while analyzing it in new terms. For this, I focused on the most famous book related to the westerners’ evaluation of Admiral Yi in Korea, The Influence of the Sea on the Political History of Japan written by George Alexander Ballard. In this book, Admiral Yi was compared with one of the most famous heros in the western world, ‘Nelson’ and praised very much about his achievements as an admiral. However, the description of Ballard was not just a compliment to Admiral Yi. The book was actually not about Korean history but about Japanese history. The real purpose of the book was notifying the threats of Japan to the public in Britain. From the beginning of the 1920s, Japan was not an ally but a danger to Britain, especially in the aspect of naval power. For expressing this argument, Japan should be described as a weak country when it had not realized the importance of sea power. And after recognizing the value of sea power, they could become one of the world powers. For this plot, Ballard had to explain that Japan was defeated by a very small and incorrigible country, Joseon(Korea). So, Ballard appropriated the Korean hero, Admiral Yi Sun-sin. In this intention, Admiral Yi was appropriated like a British person in his book. Sometimes, he was described like ‘Nelson’, and sometimes like Admiral John Fisher. In this appropriation, Admiral Yi Sun-sin was not an Asian any more. He was even portrayed like one of the talented westerners who defeated Japan’s attack. It is absolutely true that Ballard admired and respected Admiral Yi. However, we should pay attention to Ballard’s way of appropriation as well as his racist attitude. It is also important that reading his book based on correct understanding of the contexts in which he described Admiral Yi.
