Abstract

This study examines the Japan policy pursued in response to the instability in the early part of the regime and the rapidly changing international situation in the Injo’s first half time(1623~1636). The policy of this period was started by inheriting the Gwanghae-gun's amicable and utilitarian Japan policy almost without modification. By utilizing the knowhow of Gwanghae-gun's reign, which had achieved certain results under the unstable East Asian situation, without disposing of Japan's policy knowledge, the relationship with Japan remained relatively stable during this period. Such a policy has also been effective in the process of sorting out Yi Gwal’s insurrection(1624). In addition to the fact that the Joseon government's Japan policy was effective, Japan's cooperative attitude was also a factor in maintaining the stable relationship with Japan, in the midst of crisis. It is a representative example that at the time of Jeongmyo horan(1627), Tsushima attempted diplomatic cohesion by presenting and selling weapons. The most prominent scene in the relationship with Japan of Injo’s first half time was Japanese envoy Genpou’s visiting Joseon's capital Hanyang(1629). In this regard, the focus of attention in this paper is the process of discussing the response of the Joseon government. Unlike Gwanghae-gun's government that prevent the persistent demands of visiting Hanyang by excusing the interference of Ming Dynasty, Injo’s regime failed to cope with the creation of diplomatic justification. It is also characteristic that the discussion surrounding Japanese envoy's visit to Hanyang was based on a composition of ‘King Injo vs government officials’.
