Abstract

A process by which the two countries of Joseon and Japan discussed issues sufficiently and talked about the rules for the Tongsinsa official's documents was necessary for discussions to succeed. The discussion regarding the rules for the Tongsinsa that visited Edo in the fifth lunar month of 1748 began in the fourth lunar month of 1747. Gifts and greetings to the Shogun raised the problem that there was no record that established the precedent. This matter was settled in the sixth lunar month. However, the issue of the number of administrative officers emerged in the eleventh lunar month. Administrative officers who managed the affairs of the Edo Shogunate numbered four men in 1719. But this number increased to five, and then to six. This not only differed from the precedent, but was also a financial burden when preparing gifts. This issue was caused by the increase in the number of people in the Japanese retinue. A bad crop followed, and Joseon was for a time in difficult economic straits. It was difficult for Joseon to accept the increase in the number of administrative officials. Strong discussion continued between the Japanese messengers and a Korean interpreter from the twelfth lunar month to the second lunar month of the next year. Finally, Joseon decided to provide gifts to five Japanese administrative officers. This study has clarified that the officials in charge of Joseon and of Japan engaged in a strong discussion and fought in a controversy in order to support the honor of the two countries by reading So-ke documents. As a result, it was clarified that the document containing the number of administrative officers received when Hyeon Taeik and Hong Seonggu went to Tsushima as interpreters was not transmitted to the Joseon Court and there was no record of Joseon.
