Abstract

Mok Il-shin is a poet who mainly wrote in the 1930s. He left approximately 400 literary work including children’s song, poem, lyrics, school song, national folk song, and prose as well as well-known Korean children’s songs「bicycle (jajeongeo)」and 「who’s sleeping (nuganuga jamjana)」. However, he did not receive much attention, and the value of his literary work has not been properly studied nor assessed until today. For this reason, this paper was planned to introduce the life and the literary works of Mok Il-shin, who enthusiastically worked especially in the 1930s when is called the golden age of children’s song. This paper discusses children’s song only among the many literary works that he left. The research object was chosen from the collection that Mok Il-shin scrapped himself and his literary works that I found. After studying his works, this study could find that his works considerably carry on the tradition of the 1920s’ song-oriented standard children’s poem by keeping some distance from the 1930s’ dispute of “differentiation of children’s song and children’s poem.” However, the context of his children’s song was different from the trend of the 1920s which is the feeling of sorrow. Rather, the context of his work contains bright and healthy childhood. Also, this paper could realize that in the format of his children’s song, symbolic sounds were used a lot, and by making unique changes of lines and stanza he created poetic effects. This distinctive use of symbolic sounds and unique change of poem’s format contribute to his works to be more bright and cheerful. As mentioned earlier, Mok Il-shin has not been recognized for the past 100 years of Korean children’s literature history. However, he worked more passionately than any other poet in the 1930s and left many literary pieces that are widely loved until today. Therefore, even if it is a little belated, his literary works deserve more attention and in-depth studies.
